Roof Drainage: Not my problem ... Maybe

چکیده
Many strucrural engineers are surprised to learn that the In~rnotional Building Code (IBC, 2009) requires the roof structure to be engineered for standing water weight in the vicinity of the drains and scuppers regardless of roof slope. In addition, some low-slope roofs also require special attenlion for water weight and stiffness for safety against ponding failures or protection against accelerated roofing deterioration. With a mixture of overlapping design disciplines between the archi~t, plumbing consultant and structural engineer, proper roof drainage is often not fully addressed in building design and can lead to catastrophic collapse. The author has been involved as an expert consultant in several roof collapses in California due to excessive rain water accumulation, and brings some lessons learned to the profession. This paper provides an overview of the various disciplines involved in transporting rainwater from roofs, and recommendations for engineers to comply with code requirements.

Issues Facing Design Professionals through the Lens of Two Rain-Induced Roof Collapses
The drainage of low-sloped roof systems involves multiple design professionals, and often each has a different opinion as to their design responsibility. Roofing issues have been identified as being a number one source of litigation, and rain-induced roof collapses continue to occur with alarming frequency. With the backdrop of several rain-induced roof collapses, this paper illustrates the com...
متن کاملThe GREENROOF module (v7.3) for modelling green roof hydrological and energetic performances within TEB
The need to prepare cities for climate change adaptation requests the urban modeller community to implement sustainable adaptation strategies within their models to be tested against specific city morphologies and scenarios. Greening city roofs is part of these strategies. In this context, the GREENROOF module for TEB (town energy balance) has been developed to model the interactions between bu...

Let’s commemorate the 100th anniversary of “pervaporation” by committing ourselves to position it as it deserves. Dear editor, this Submission is a letter to the Editor, and thus, a abstract does not apply. Therefore, this section will be used as a space for my comment or suggestion because it is needed for the next step. When we submit a letter to the editor,...
متن کاملEffect of P-Reactive Drainage Aggregates on Green Roof Runoff Quality
The main hypothesis of the presented study is that the negative effect of phosphorus leaching from a green roof substrate can be reduced by including P-reactive material in a drainage layer. In this work, different aggregates (Pollytag, lightweight expanded clay aggregates, chalcedony, serpentynite and crushed autoclaved aerated concrete) to be used as the green roof drainage layer are describe...
متن کاملAnimal Suffering: A Moorean Response to a Problem of Evil
In this paper, I propose a new response to a particular instance of the problem of evil: the problem of animal suffering. My solution, in brief, is that the rational theist may argue, justifiably, that an omnipotent, omniscient, omnibenevolent God would not allow gratuitous animal suffering to occur, and, therefore, all instances of animal suffering that are encountered are not instanc...
